Photographers in Córdoba

Córdoba is the capital of the province of Córdoba and Argentina's second city, about 700 km northwest of Buenos Aires at the foot of the Sierras Chicas. It is a university city first: the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba traces its origin to the Jesuit college of the early 1600s, and students set the pace of the centre, the bars of Güemes and the lawns of Nueva Córdoba.

The historic core is the Manzana Jesuítica, inscribed with the Jesuit estancias of the province on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000. The block holds the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, the Colegio Nacional de Monserrat and the old university rectorate, now the Museo Histórico UNC at Obispo Trejo 242. The museum opens Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 17:30 and on Saturdays and holidays from 9:30 to 14:30, and its individual entry is free on Wednesdays.

A short walk south, Avenida Hipólito Yrigoyen runs past the city's second set of backdrops. The Paseo del Buen Pastor, a former women's prison turned cultural centre at number 325, runs a dancing-water show every hour from 17:00 to 21:00. The Palacio Ferreyra, now the Museo Superior de Bellas Artes Evita at number 511, opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30.

Clients here are largely Argentine: couples marrying with family from across the province, fiestas de 15, and a steady calendar of congresses, since the municipality counts more than 500 events a year in the city. Indoor heritage sites set their own rules for professional cameras, and those rules are confirmed in writing before the date.

Timing

When to photograph in Córdoba

Córdoba has a dry winter and a wet summer. From May to August the sky is clear and the light is low and golden by 17:00, the most reliable months for outdoor portraits in the centre. Summer, December to February, brings heat and evening storms, so sessions move to early morning and indoor sites. The provincial Registro Civil celebrates outdoor ceremonies only from October to April, weather permitting, which is also when most weddings fall. January shortens the museum hours in the Manzana Jesuítica.

Questions about photography in Córdoba

Can we do a photo session inside the Manzana Jesuítica in Córdoba?

Only by request. The Museo Histórico UNC in the Manzana Jesuítica of Córdoba allows photography for personal, educational, research and press purposes, and any other shoot needs a written request at least 7 days ahead. The museum sets the day and time and may decline, so a Córdoba session there is never promised before it says yes.

When is the best time of year for outdoor photos in Córdoba?

May to August, the dry winter, is the most reliable season for outdoor photos in Córdoba: clear skies and low golden light by 17:00. Córdoba summers bring heat and evening storms, so December-to-February sessions are planned for early morning or for indoor sites.

How many witnesses does a civil wedding in Córdoba need?

Two adult witnesses with identification, according to the Registro Civil of the province of Córdoba, for a ceremony at the office matching either partner's address. A Córdoba wedding celebrated by the Registro's mobile office outside that office needs four witnesses under the national Civil and Commercial Code.
