Photographers in Mendoza

Mendoza is the capital of Mendoza Province, a city built on an irrigated oasis at the foot of the Andes and the centre of Argentina's largest wine region. The Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura (INV) recorded 13,147,187 quintales of grapes harvested in the province in 2026, out of 18,391,299 for the whole country. Photo sessions here move between three settings within about an hour of each other: the tree-lined city, the wineries of Luján de Cuyo and Maipú to the south, and the high valleys further out.

The city's great outdoor room is Parque General San Martín. Provincial Ley 19 of 6 November 1896 funded it, and the landscape architect Carlos Thays drew the first plans five days later. Today the park covers 307 cultivated hectares plus 86 in expansion, with 17 km of drives, and is a protected urban environmental area. At its western edge the Cerro de la Gloria carries the Monumento al Ejército de los Andes by Juan Manuel Ferrari, built between 1909 and 1914. The Mendoza Film Commission lists the Dirección de Parques y Paseos Públicos as the office that regulates the park, the Cerro de la Gloria and the Parque Cívico, and productions file a written note at its desk on Paseo Los Plátanos.

The mountains shape the light. The Andes rise to the west, so the sun drops behind them before it reaches the horizon, and the last half hour of the day is shade with a bright sky rather than a long golden glow. Mornings are clear and hard. Most portrait sessions in the city are therefore planned for the first two hours after sunrise or the hour before the sun meets the ridge.

Most clients are on a wine trip: couples marrying or celebrating at a bodega, families on a week in wine country, and hotels and wineries commissioning their own pictures. Every winery is private and sets its own rules for outside photographers, which are confirmed with the venue in writing before the date. The Valle de Uco, where the newer high-altitude vineyards are, is roughly an hour to an hour and a half south by road.

Timing

When to photograph in Mendoza

The harvest sets the calendar. In 2026 the INV published weekly harvest reports from the week ending 25 January to the week ending 26 April, and the vineyards are fullest and greenest just before picking. The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia, made official by provincial decree in 1936, closes the season, and its Acto Central has been staged at the Teatro Griego Frank Romero Day since 1963; hotels fill for that weekend. In April and May the vine leaves turn yellow and red. From May to November the Zonda, a hot, very dry and strong wind off the Andes, can blow on any given day and stop an outdoor session, so a weather day is kept in reserve.

Questions about photography in Mendoza

When is the grape harvest in Mendoza?

The Mendoza grape harvest runs through late summer and early autumn. In 2026 the Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura published weekly harvest reports from the week ending 25 January to the week ending 26 April, and the province brought in 13,147,187 quintales. A Mendoza session with grapes still on the vine is safest in February or early March.

What is the Zonda wind and can it cancel a session in Mendoza?

The Zonda is a strong, very dry and hot wind that comes down the Andes, and Argentina's national government describes it as occurring between May and November along the foot of the range. On a Zonda day in Mendoza the air fills with dust and an outdoor session is moved; the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional issues alerts for it.

Do we need a permit for photos in Parque General San Martín?

Parque General San Martín in Mendoza is regulated by the provincial Dirección de Parques y Paseos Públicos, which the Mendoza Film Commission lists as the office for productions there. A production files a written note before the date; for a short portrait session with no set-up, we confirm the current position with the office first.
