Argentina gives the session more range than most countries. In Buenos Aires, the cobbles and antique shops of San Telmo, the French facades of Recoleta and the jacarandas of Palermo in late spring each set a different mood within a short taxi ride. In Bariloche and Villa La Angostura the backdrop is lakes and forest; in Mendoza and the Valle de Uco it is vines below the Andes; in Salta and Cafayate it is adobe, cactus and red rock; in Córdoba and Rosario it is a riverfront or a colonial centre. Half an hour is enough for one place done well, or two that sit a few steps apart.

The light follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar. December to February is summer, when sunsets come late and the midday sun is hard enough to flatten faces, so sessions are set for the first or last hour of light. June to August is winter, when sunsets come early and the light stays low and soft most of the day, which suits city sessions in Buenos Aires. Spring and autumn split the difference, and autumn adds the yellow poplars of Mendoza and the red lengas of Patagonia.

Some places come with someone else’s rules. A bodega, an estancia or a hotel decides whether an outside photographer may work on its grounds, so ask before choosing it. A national park such as Nahuel Huapi or Los Glaciares is run by the Administración de Parques Nacionales, which regulates photography with a commercial purpose under Resolución HD 297/2018; we check the park’s position before confirming, or pick a viewpoint just outside it. If the session is really for a save-the-date, the engagement page is built for that, and if it is hiding a ring, look at proposal photography.

Questions about couple photography

What is a couple photo session in Argentina?

A couple photo session in Argentina is a 30-minute portrait session for two people, with no wedding or proposal attached: a walk through San Telmo in Buenos Aires, a lakeshore in Bariloche or a vineyard row in Mendoza, photographed with light direction. It suits anniversaries, a first trip together, or simply wanting good photographs of the two of you.

What time of day is best for couple photos in Argentina?

Couple photos in Argentina look best in the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset, when light is low and streets are quieter. Argentina runs on the Southern Hemisphere calendar, so a December sunset comes far later than a June one, and the couple session start time is set from the real sunset of your date.

What should we wear for a couple session in Buenos Aires or Patagonia?

For a couple session in Buenos Aires, plain colours and one shared tone photograph well against painted walls and stone; avoid large logos and fine stripes. For a couple session in Patagonia, bring a warm layer even in summer, because wind off the lakes and glaciers makes people hunch, and hunched shoulders show in every portrait.

Can we do a couple session inside a national park in Argentina?

A couple session inside an Argentine national park, such as Nahuel Huapi or Los Glaciares, falls under the Administración de Parques Nacionales, which regulates photography with a commercial purpose under Resolución HD 297/2018 and asks for requests 20 business days ahead. We check the park’s position before confirming, or choose a viewpoint outside the park boundary.
