Elopement photography

Elopement photography in Argentina is three hours of coverage for a ceremony with no reception, priced from $750 for 150 edited photographs delivered within 3 weeks. The couple, a celebrant and a handful of witnesses at most: the ceremony, portraits straight afterwards, and one move to a second location with different light or scenery. Without a dinner, a first dance or speeches the day does not need eight hours, and the price reflects that.

An elopement in Argentina, and what it is not

Because there is no reception venue, an elopement depends on the place more than on the timeline. A row of vines in a Mendoza bodega, a jetty on Lago Nahuel Huapi, a cobbled corner of San Telmo in Buenos Aires or the red rock around Cafayate each belongs to someone, and each owner sets the terms. Wineries, estancias and hotels decide whether they host a small ceremony and whether an outside photographer may work there. National parks are run by the Administración de Parques Nacionales, whose Resolución HD 297/2018 asks for a written request at least 20 business days ahead for photography with a commercial purpose. The photographer helps choose a place where a ceremony is allowed and where the light suits your hour, and the place-specific rules live on the city pages.

Couples who elope in Argentina choose between a symbolic ceremony and a legal one. Argentine law recognises a marriage only when it is celebrated before a Registro Civil officer, with two witnesses in the office or four outside it under article 418 of the Código Civil y Comercial. Most eloping couples therefore keep the elopement symbolic and handle the legal marriage at home, or book a separate civil wedding in Buenos Aires. Either way, the photographs are the same.

The last two hours before sunset are the usual window, and the timeline starts from the real sunset of your date: a December evening in Patagonia stays light far longer than a June evening in Buenos Aires. If the guest list grows beyond a few people or a dinner is added, full wedding coverage is the better fit; if the ceremony is the end of a long hike, the adventure elopement is built for that day.

Questions about elopement photography

What is the difference between an elopement and a small wedding in Argentina?

An elopement in Argentina is a ceremony and portraits with no dinner and no party: the two of you, a celebrant and a few witnesses at most, photographed over 3 hours. A small wedding with an asado, toasts and a guest list needs full-day wedding coverage instead, because the reception is where most of the hours go.

Is an elopement in Argentina legal or symbolic?

Most elopements in Argentina are symbolic ceremonies with no legal effect, because Argentine law recognises a marriage only when it is celebrated before a Registro Civil officer. Couples who want the legal act can book it separately, as a civil wedding, and keep the elopement for the place that matters to them.

Can we hold an elopement ceremony inside an Argentine national park?

An elopement in an Argentine national park such as Nahuel Huapi or Los Glaciares falls under the Administración de Parques Nacionales, whose Resolución HD 297/2018 requires a written request at least 20 business days ahead for photography with a commercial purpose. Ask the park before planning the elopement; a lodge or estancia on private land is often simpler.

What time of day works for an elopement in Argentina?

The last two hours before sunset are the usual window for elopement photography in Argentina, with sunrise as the quieter alternative in busy places such as Buenos Aires or the Bariloche lakeshore. A 3-hour elopement usually starts about two and a half hours before sunset so the portraits finish in the last light.
