Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires

Photographers in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and a self-governing city, the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA), of about 200 square kilometres on the western shore of the Río de la Plata. Sessions here are planned by neighbourhood rather than by landmark: Palermo for parks and roses, Recoleta for French-style façades, San Telmo for cobblestones and antique shops, La Boca for painted tin houses, and Puerto Madero for brick docks and glass towers. Most of them are within 30 minutes of each other by car outside rush hour.

Public space has one permit office. BASet, part of the city's BA Audiovisual programme, issues a general habilitación that covers filming and photography camera-in-hand with a small crew and no equipment occupying the street, and a separate set permit for anything that does occupy it — stands, reflectors on stands, a table, a lighting kit. A photography set is requested at least 4 business days ahead, the applicant must hold civil-liability insurance that names the city, and the permit papers have to be on hand during the shoot in case of an inspection. We plan most couple and portrait sessions to stay camera-in-hand for exactly this reason.

Private ground is a separate matter. Cafés, hotels, milongas, museums and the Jardín Japonés each set their own rule for an outside photographer, and that is asked of the venue in writing before the date. Drones are a third regime: under ANAC's RAAC Part 101, a drone of 250 g to 25 kg flies in the Open category without prior authorization, but never inside an aerodrome control zone, over a person who has not consented, or over the Casa Rosada, embassies and public buildings. Aeroparque Jorge Newbery sits on the city's own riverfront, so aerial work over the city is quoted only after the flight area has been checked against the airspace map.

Most clients are travellers from the United States, Canada and Europe on a few nights in the city — couples, proposals, tango sessions and weddings — and Argentine couples and brands who book on the Spanish side.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Buenos Aires

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Paseo del Rosedal (Parque Tres de Febrero)

The fenced rose garden on Avenida Infanta Isabel inside the Bosques de Palermo, with a white bridge over the lake, pergolas and the Jardín de los Poetas. It is the most requested backdrop in the city for couples and families, and also one of the busiest at weekends.

    Best time
Weekday mornings after the 10:00 opening
    Permit
Free entry; the city lists it as open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays and in strong wind or persistent rain

  • San Telmo (Calle Defensa)

The oldest residential quarter of the city, with cobbled streets, low colonial and Italianate houses, antique shops and the long straight run of Calle Defensa. Its façades face each other across narrow streets, which keeps the light soft for most of the day.

    Best time
Early morning, before the shops open
    Permit
Public street: camera-in-hand work falls under the BASet general habilitación, and a set with equipment needs a BASet permit requested 4 business days ahead

  • Caminito (La Boca)

A short pedestrian street of painted tin-and-wood houses by the Riachuelo, named after a 1926 tango. The colours are the reason to come and the crowds are the reason to come early: by late morning the street is full of visitors.

    Best time
Before 10:00, when the street is still empty
    Permit
Public street: handheld work is covered by the BASet general habilitación; tripods, stands and lights count as a set and need their own permit

    Source: static.buenosaires.gob.ar · Checked October 2026

  • Puerto Madero and the Puente de la Mujer

The old port, rebuilt as a district of brick warehouses, glass towers and wide promenades along four docks. The white Puente de la Mujer, a swing footbridge by Santiago Calatrava, crosses Dique 3 and is the strongest single shape in the city at dusk.

    Best time
Blue hour, when the towers light up
    Permit
Public promenades: camera-in-hand under the BASet general habilitación; terraces and dock-side restaurants are private and set their own rules

  • Recoleta and the cemetery walls

The district of French-style mansions, the Basílica del Pilar and the great rubber tree in front of La Biela. Plaza Francia and the avenues around the cemetery give stone, trees and wide pavements without stepping inside the cemetery itself.

    Best time
    Late afternoon in Plaza Francia
    Permit
The Cementerio de la Recoleta takes tourist visits daily from 9:00 to 17:00 with paid tickets for non-residents; it is a working cemetery, so sessions stay outside its walls

Timing

When to photograph in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has four mild seasons and no dry season to plan around. Spring, from September to November, is the most photographed: the roses of the Rosedal peak around October and November, and the jacarandas turn whole avenues violet in November. Summer, from December to February, is hot and humid, with sunset after 20:00 around the solstice, and many porteños leave the city in January. Autumn, March to May, brings soft light and fallen leaves in the parks. Winter, June to August, is cool rather than cold and sets the sun before 18:00, which suits a short golden-hour session before dinner.

Questions about photography in Buenos Aires

Do we need a permit for a photo session in Buenos Aires?

For a handheld session, the photographer works under the general habilitación that BASet, the Buenos Aires city filming office, issues for camera-in-hand work with a small crew. Anything that occupies public space with equipment — stands, a table, lighting — is a photography set and needs a BASet permit requested at least 4 business days before the date.

Can a drone fly over Buenos Aires for photos or video?

Only where the airspace allows it. Under ANAC's RAAC Parts 100 and 101, a drone of 250 g to 25 kg needs no prior authorization in the Open category, but it may not enter an aerodrome control zone, fly over a crowd or over anyone who has not consented, or pass over the Casa Rosada, embassies and public buildings. Aerial work in Buenos Aires is quoted only once the flight area has been checked against those limits.

When is the best time of year for photos in Buenos Aires?

October and November are the strongest months for photos in Buenos Aires: the Rosedal roses peak, the jacarandas flower in November and the light is warm without summer heat. Winter sessions in Buenos Aires work well too, because the sun sets before 18:00 and a golden-hour shoot fits before dinner.

How long before the date should we book a session in Buenos Aires?

Two to three weeks is comfortable for a couple or proposal session in Buenos Aires, and enough to request a BASet set permit if the plan needs equipment in a street or park. Weddings in Buenos Aires book six to twelve months ahead, mainly because the venues and the Registro Civil calendar set the date.
