Civil wedding photography
Civil wedding photography in Argentina covers the legal marriage ceremony at a Registro Civil, priced from $350 for 2 hours and 120 edited photographs delivered within 10 days. The two hours take in your arrival, the ceremony led by the Registro officer, the signatures of the spouses and witnesses, the moment you receive the libreta de familia, and portraits on the streets or in a park near the office. It is the only ceremony in Argentina that creates a marriage: under article 406 of the Código Civil y Comercial, consent has to be given personally and jointly before the competent authority, and article 418 sets two witnesses for a ceremony in the office and four for one outside it.

For two visitors, the City of Buenos Aires runs a specific procedure for couples in transit. Its Registro Civil asks for both passports, sworn marriage declaration forms sent by email, two witnesses over 18 with a valid Argentine DNI and an address in Argentina, and a notarial act from a CABA escribano stating your temporary address and length of stay. Anyone who does not understand Spanish needs a traductor público, and once the request is approved the appointment falls within 5 business days. The ceremonies at the city’s emblematic places and private venues are a different procedure that requires at least one spouse with a DNI showing a CABA address, so they are rarely open to visiting couples.
Outside the capital the rules change by province. Tigre, San Antonio de Areco, Mar del Plata and Cariló all fall under the Registro de las Personas of Buenos Aires Province, which asks for an appointment 20 business days before the date, documents up to 14 days before, and two witnesses over 18 with a DNI. Mendoza, Río Negro, Salta, Córdoba and the other provinces each run their own Registro with their own forms. Ask the Registro in the city where you plan to marry which of your foreign documents need an apostille or a translation, and whether a previous divorce abroad needs authorising first.
A civil wedding is short, and the photography plan is built around that. The ceremony itself often lasts minutes, families and witnesses fill a small room, and each Registro office decides where a photographer may stand, so the photographer arrives early, asks the staff, and saves the long portraits for afterwards. Many couples pair this service with a symbolic celebration on another day — an elopement in Patagonia, a party at an estancia — and book the two separately.
Questions about civil wedding photography
How can two foreign tourists have a civil wedding in Buenos Aires?
Two foreign tourists can have a civil wedding in the City of Buenos Aires through the Registro Civil procedure for couples in transit: passports, sworn marriage forms, a notarial act from a CABA escribano stating your temporary address, and two witnesses over 18 with a valid Argentine DNI. Once approved, the appointment falls within 5 business days.
How many witnesses does a civil wedding in Argentina need?
A civil wedding in Argentina needs two witnesses when it is celebrated in the Registro Civil office and four when it is celebrated outside it, under article 418 of the Código Civil y Comercial. The City of Buenos Aires asks that witnesses for tourists hold a valid Argentine DNI and an address in Argentina.
Do we need a translator for a civil wedding in Argentina?
A civil wedding in Argentina is conducted in Spanish, and the City of Buenos Aires requires a traductor público, a certified public translator, for any spouse who does not understand Spanish. Book the translator when you book the Registro appointment, and ask the Registro which of your foreign documents need an apostille.
Can a civil wedding in Argentina take place outside the Registro office?
A civil wedding outside the Registro office is possible in Argentina, with four witnesses instead of two, but each registry sets who may book it: in the City of Buenos Aires, ceremonies at emblematic places or private venues require at least one spouse with a DNI showing a CABA address, which excludes most visiting couples.
How far ahead should a civil wedding be booked in Buenos Aires Province?
A civil wedding in Buenos Aires Province, which includes Tigre, San Antonio de Areco, Mar del Plata and Cariló, is requested 20 business days before the date according to the provincial Registro de las Personas, with documents due up to 14 days before. Each delegation confirms the requirements for foreign spouses.
