Photographers in San Antonio de Areco

San Antonio de Areco is a town of the Buenos Aires pampas on the Río Areco, about 110 km north-west of the capital along Ruta Nacional 8, and the place Argentina associates with the gaucho. Ricardo Güiraldes set his 1926 novel Don Segundo Sombra here, the municipal Museo Gauchesco has kept its collection since 1938, and the Fiesta de la Tradición has been held every November since 1939. The town calls itself the Capital Nacional de la Tradición, and in 2026 it celebrates the centenary of the novel.

The old centre is heritage by decree. Decreto 1305 of 1999 declared a sector of the town and its railway station a bien de interés histórico nacional, and made national historic monuments of the Puente Viejo over the river, the parish church of San Antonio de Padua, the Casa de la Intendencia, the Parque Criollo with its museum and the Pulpería La Blanqueada, and the Paseo de la Estancia La Porteña. Low houses with iron grilles, corner almacenes, silversmiths' workshops and dirt side streets make the town itself the backdrop.

Around the town lie the estancias, working and historic ranches that now host weddings, corporate days and guests overnight. Each sets its own rule for an outside photographer, and that is asked in writing before the date. The open countryside also widens the drone rules: under RAAC Part 100 as amended by Resolución ANAC 312/2026, any rotary-wing drone flying only over a rural zone is in the Open category whatever its weight, while over the town the Open category stops at 25 kg.

Clients are couples marrying at estancias, families and travellers on a day out from Buenos Aires, hotels and estancias that need images to sell rooms, and companies bringing teams to the countryside.

Timing

When to photograph in San Antonio de Areco

Spring, September to November, is the high season in San Antonio de Areco: green pampas, mild days and the Fiesta de la Tradición in mid-November, when the town fills with riders and visitors. Summer, December to February, is hot and open, with storms that build in the afternoon and long golden evenings over the fields. Autumn, March to May, is the calmest and most comfortable for estancia weddings. Winter, June to August, brings frost at dawn, bare trees and low sun all day, which suits portraits by the fire in an estancia casco.

Questions about photography in San Antonio de Areco

How far is San Antonio de Areco from Buenos Aires?

San Antonio de Areco is about 110 km north-west of Buenos Aires along Ruta Nacional 8, roughly a 90-minute to two-hour drive depending on traffic. Most sessions in San Antonio de Areco are planned as a day trip, while estancia weddings and corporate events usually keep guests overnight.

When is the Fiesta de la Tradición in San Antonio de Areco?

Every November, close to the Día de la Tradición on 10 November. The festival has been held in San Antonio de Areco since 1939 and fills the town for about a week with riders, folk music and horsemanship in the Parque Criollo, and the municipality publishes the programme of each edition in advance; the 2026 one appeared in September.

Can a drone fly at an estancia near San Antonio de Areco?

Often, yes. Under ANAC's RAAC Part 101, an Open-category flight needs no prior authorization, stays below 122 m and within sight of the pilot, and never passes over anyone who has not consented, and the amended Part 100 puts any rotary-wing drone flying only over a rural zone in the Open category. Each estancia near San Antonio de Areco also has to agree to the flight.

Is the Museo Gauchesco in San Antonio de Areco open every day?

No. The Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes in San Antonio de Areco opens on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays, with entry from 11:15 to 16:30 and the complex closing at 17:00. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so sessions in the Parque Criollo are planned around those days.
