Photographers in Tigre

Tigre is a river town and district of Buenos Aires Province, about 30 km north of the capital, built where the Luján, Tigre and Reconquista rivers meet the islands of the Paraná Delta. Its mainland half is a town of rowing clubs, a riverside promenade and the old Tigre Club building, now the Museo de Arte Tigre. Its island half is the Delta itself: wooded islands, weekend houses and inns reached only by water, either on the shared lanchas colectivas that leave from the river station or on a private boat. The Mitre railway line runs from Retiro to Tigre, and the trip takes about an hour.

That split shapes every session. On the mainland, couples and families work along the Paseo Victorica, past the clubhouses that line the Luján, and around the museum gardens. In the Delta, the session is planned around a boat: how the photographer gets to the island, where the boat can tie up for the golden hour and when the last lancha leaves. Wedding venues and lodges on the islands run their own boats for guests and suppliers, and that timetable becomes the wedding timeline.

Most of the ground that matters here is private. The rowing clubs are member clubs, the island venues and inns are businesses, and the museum sets its own rules for photography on its terraces, so each one is asked before the date. The Municipio de Tigre handles the public promenades. Drones are regulated nationally: under ANAC's RAAC Part 101, a drone of 250 g to 25 kg needs no prior authorization in the Open category, but it may not enter an aerodrome control zone, and the Aeropuerto Internacional de San Fernando is in the neighbouring partido, so every flight over the town is checked against the airspace map first.

Clients here are couples and families on a day trip from Buenos Aires, Argentine couples marrying at Delta venues, and owners selling or renting island houses and riverside property.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Tigre

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Paseo Victorica and the rowing clubs

The tree-lined promenade along the Luján river, where rowing clubs founded by British, Italian, Scandinavian and other communities keep their boathouses. Rowers pass close to the bank most afternoons, and the clubhouse façades give a backdrop of timber, brick and flags.

    Best time
Late afternoon, with the sun low over the Luján
    Permit
Public riverside promenade; the clubhouses and their landings are private member clubs, so their grounds are used only with the club's permission

  • Museo de Arte Tigre (ex Tigre Club)

The building of the former Tigre Club, on the riverside, which opened as the municipal art museum in 2006 and is protected as national and municipal heritage. Its terraces look over the Luján, and the gardens hold sculptures among the trees.

    Best time
    Mid-afternoon, within museum opening hours
    Permit
Paid entry for visitors, free for Tigre residents; photography sessions on the terraces and in the gardens are arranged with the museum in advance

  • Río Sarmiento and the Delta islands

The nearest of the Delta channels, lined with weeping willows, wooden docks and houses raised on stilts. Boats pass constantly by day, so a session is shot from a moored boat or a private dock rather than mid-channel.

    Best time
    Golden hour from a boat
    Permit
Reached only by lancha colectiva or private boat; island docks, inns and venues are private and set their own access for a session

  • Puerto de Frutos

The old fruit market of the Delta, opened in 1938 to sell island produce, now a market of wicker, wood and crafts along the river. Baskets, furniture and stacked crafts give colour and texture for a playful family or couple session.

    Best time
Weekday mornings, before the weekend crowd
    Permit
Open market on the Luján; the stalls are private businesses, so photographing a stall or its owner is agreed with them

Timing

When to photograph in Tigre

Tigre is greenest and most comfortable from October to April. Summer, December to February, brings long evenings on the water, hot afternoons and mosquitoes in the islands, so sessions start late in the day and repellent is part of the kit. Autumn, March to May, turns the poplars and willows of the Delta gold. Winter, June to August, is quiet and often misty at dawn, which suits moody river portraits. Weather moves the water itself: a strong south-easterly wind can push the river over the docks, and a session on the islands keeps a fallback date for that.

Questions about photography in Tigre

How do we get to a photo session on the Tigre Delta islands?

By boat only. The Tigre Delta islands have no roads, so a session there starts at the river station in Tigre on a shared lancha colectiva or a private boat booked for the session. We plan the boat, the island stop and the return trip together, so the light and the last departure from the Tigre islands line up.

Can you fly a drone over Tigre?

Over the town of Tigre, only where the airspace allows it. Under ANAC's RAAC Part 101, an Open-category drone of 250 g to 25 kg flies without prior authorization, within sight of its pilot and below 122 m, but never inside an aerodrome control zone, and the Aeropuerto Internacional de San Fernando lies in the neighbouring partido. It also may not fly over anyone who has not agreed to it, so drone work in Tigre is quoted case by case once the flight area has been checked.

Is Tigre a good day trip from Buenos Aires for a photo session?

Yes. Tigre is about 30 km north of Buenos Aires, roughly an hour by the Mitre railway line from Retiro or by car, so a session in Tigre fits into a day trip with time for lunch and a boat ride. A session in the Delta islands needs more of the day, because the boat sets the pace.
